There is strong evidence that TS is a genetic disease which is inherited from generation to generation.
Even though no gene has been determined to be the cause of Tourette's Syndrome, scientists still believe that a specific gene in a person's DNA is responsible for the syndrome.
Another theory is that the metabolism of the brain chemical dopamine is responsible.

Diagnosis of TS
There is no lab test that can diagnose tourettes because there is no known gene that carries the disorder.
To be diagnosed with tourette's syndrome, a person must:
have had many vocal tics and one or more vocal tics at some time
have tics that occur many times a day
have started the tics before he or she turns 18 years old.
Even though their are no lab tests needed to diagnose TS, a person should still obtain a thorough medical examination to rule out the possibility that the symptoms they are experiencing are not caused my another condition. Prognosis of TS
People with Tourette's Syndrome often have a very good prognosis, with 30% of people's tics lessening in intensity, and another 30-40% completely tic-free by adolescence.
Even is TS does last a person's whole life, it is not a degenerating disease, and those affected have a normal life expectancy.
Sometimes neurological disorders like mood swings, depression, and panic attacks can afflict a person with TS in their adult years

The side effects of many of the medications would be more harmful than the symptoms which these people with minor cases experience. Many medicines have been used to try to reduce the tics associated with TS. Many of these medicines cause movement disorders and depression though. This was a good article and very readable. I couldn't find any spelling errors or grammatical errors. It's amazing how many famous people had this syndrome and learned to overcome it. I would have never known that Dan Ackroyd ever had this disorder - probably because symptoms go away by adulthood most times. But I have watched Ghost Busters many times and find this fact about Dan very interesting!
